iPhone Duo Problems: Cracked Screens and Low Supply

iPhone Duo Problems: Cracked Screens and Low Supply

Apple's first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, opened for pre-orders on October 16 and went on sale on October 23, 2026. It starts at $1,999 for the 256 GB model, and it has barely reached customers before the complaints started. We are a repair shop, not a news site, so we are going to stick to what has been reported, say where the information is still unconfirmed, and explain what it could mean if your phone ever needs a fix.

Cracked inner screens: what owners are reporting

Within hours of the first sales in Australia and China, owners began posting photos of an inner screen that cracked along the fold, with a bright line of pixels running toward the edge of the display. Together the damage forms an L-shape. Similar photos have since appeared on Reddit, X and the MacRumors forums, including from the United States.

The details are still thin:

  • One Australian owner reported that the screen broke about six hours after purchase, after fewer than 20 openings. They said they felt something give along the hinge before hearing the crack.
  • Reviewers who folded the phone thousands of times in their own tests reported wear, but no cracks.
  • Some of the photos from China may show demo units, and in most cases nobody knows how the phone was handled.
  • Apple has not published an explanation. Early reports say it replaced some phones in store and offered an express replacement over the phone (with a hold for the full price of the phone), but it is unclear whether that will continue.

So is it a design flaw, a small batch of faulty units, or ordinary accidental damage? Nobody outside Apple knows yet, and it would be a mistake to decide from a handful of posts. It is too early to say how widespread this is.

Supply is tight, and deliveries are slipping

The other problem is getting one at all. Industry reports, mostly from anonymous supply-chain sources, say that the phone is very hard to build:

  • Final assembly at Foxconn was reportedly only a little above 60% yield in mid-September, and it could take months to improve.
  • Samsung Display, which makes the foldable panel and hinge, is reported to be struggling with its own yields after late design changes.
  • Apple is reported to be targeting roughly 6 to 8 million units this year, against the 20 to 30 million of a typical Pro iPhone cycle.
  • Pre-order delivery estimates slipped within about half an hour of the launch. By one report, many countries were quoted late January 2027, although Apple often delivers earlier than it estimates.

Treat the exact numbers as unconfirmed: they come from anonymous sources. The direction, though, is consistent across reports: demand is higher than the supply Apple can build.

What this means for repairs

A foldable is a different job from a regular iPhone. The inner screen is flexible and very thin, the hinge is a precision mechanism, and a crack along the fold is rarely a quick glass swap. On a brand-new model there is another limit: replacement parts are scarce for everyone, because the same suppliers that are struggling to build phones are the ones making the parts.

The cost shows how serious a foldable repair is: without AppleCare+, reports put repairs and replacements for the Duo anywhere between $49 and $1,499, depending on the damage.

We have not worked on an iPhone Duo yet, and we will not promise a repair we have not tested. What we can do is look at it. The diagnostic is free, and we will tell you plainly what is wrong, whether it can be repaired here, and whether the repair makes sense compared with using your warranty or AppleCare+.

If you have one, or you are about to buy

  • Open it gently and with the phone flat. Do not force the hinge, and do not open it with one hand while walking.
  • Keep the fold clean. A grain of grit or lint caught in the crease is a classic way to damage a foldable screen. Wipe the inside before you close it.
  • Do not press hard on the crease and do not use sharp fingernails or tools on the inner screen.
  • Check the phone as soon as you get it. Open and close it, look for lines or bright pixels, and take photos. If something is wrong in the first days, deal with Apple first: that is when returns and warranty work best.
  • Consider AppleCare+. For a $1,999 phone with a fragile new screen, accidental damage coverage is worth pricing out.
  • Keep the box and your receipt until you are sure the phone is fine.
